When you're winless, you can only go up.

The 0-16 Detroit Lions needed some change (obviously). Off the field comes this new logo. While the team's Honolulu blue, white and black uniforms are untouched, the logo has more of a fierceness with the name in an italicized slant. But they're 0-16, so is anyone really paying attention?

Ok, we are. As far as sport logos go, more specifically, NFL logos (yes, there is a style) the illustration is not bad. In our opinion, it's kinda like IBM. Updated classic. BUt, not so sure about the typography. Not doing it for us.

Hold On

Attention, attention. We have now entered the era of logos for every initiative.
Creative director Steve Juras led designers Aaron Draplin and Chris Glass in the assignment to create two logos, one for projects completed under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), and the second for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) team.

These are..interesting...kinda. I guess I'm still stuck on the acronym of "Tiger" (rowr). Maybe they're hoping to get the "they're GREEEEAAAAT" reaction when someone sees the logo, then applying it to the recovery as opposed to the logo.

I'm mixed on this. I am fully one part "yea, logos for everyone" and one equal part "That's the best they got?"

Need a little more SuperBowl

Need just a little more SuperBowl, instead of the ads, lets look at the design. From the meager entries of the first type-only bowl to the modern, more flat-than-usual and I-am-thankful-for-that of yesterdays extravaganza.

New Orleans Hornets

When a professional team goes through a rrebrand, it usually doesn't hit well in the design world, with very few exceptions. I happen to take a different view. What I find interesting is how many logos within a league seem to, at some level, relate and match to eachother. Either way, any time you can bring in any bit of a concept, super. With that said, the fleur-de-lise is nice, but I am confused about the NOLA?, no idea what that is. And as the source put it, it could be worse. Their joke, not mine.

Logo Lounge Trends 2008

I look forward to this every year. If you are not familiar with Logo Lounge, they take submission from designers all over the world, pick the best, categorize them based on type, and then publish the book. in addition, the editor, tyakes it all in and sums it up in logo trends:

We saw less emphasis on sustainability or general "greenness" in logo design. There's plenty of natural imagery, but being "green" doesn't seem all that unique anymore.

Colors are becoming more vivid. Desaturation has drained away, and the chroma factor pumped up.

There's an overall move toward cleanliness - in type, in line, in color - as if ideas are getting more and more succinct. It may be an indication of the degree of seriousness with which branding is now regarded.

Less is more common: less calligraphy, less Photoshop tricks, less artificial highlights.

Found pattern and illustration hang on and on and on. With a bottomless treasure chest of visual history constantly at the ready through retail collections and over the internet, it's a direction that's not likely to run its course soon, if ever.

These are just a few of the trends, for more, head on over to their site.

Tournament of Logos

Maybe Designers are just not competitive enough, or maybe most weren't jocks, paying too much attention to what things look like, or maybe we're just too busy doing new logos vrs locking them in a cage and having them battle to the death. Maybe I just wish I thought of this first...Tournament of hockey logos, Pros and Hockey Universe if you want to choose, both are here, get your votes in.
