Stunning fashion. Can't imagine sneaking up on anyone. But it is beautiful, I like it more off the model though.

4th Annual Paper Fashion Show

Oh sure. Models can strut around in silk and polyester on some Parisian runway. But it takes real talent to pull it off in paper. The 4th Annual ADCD Paper Couture Show again didn’t disappoint as teams of Colorado’s most up-and-coming designers sliced and diced paper to create dazzling dresses out of this intriguing materials. Attendance was at an all-time high at the DC Lounge for this fundraising event (all proceeds going to the Downtown Center for the Visual Arts), and saw tight, tight competition. In fact, first place and third place were only separated by a mere four points.

Here are your 2008 winners:

First Place went to Five Green Boxes. Designers Charlotte Elich, Carrie Vadas, Rachele Elich and Carlen Vadas teamed up to create “Printemp”, an inspiration concocted by Springtime and the Astro Bright line of paper sponsored by XPEDX. Jennifer Carpenter modeled.

Second Place was given to EDAW with Vaike Hass, JanMarie Locket, Kathy Kambic, Allison Graham, Desnise Anderson piloting four outfits that span the history of the profession of urban planning and landscape architecture. Kathy Kambic and Clay Phellan modeled. XPDEX sponsored

Third Place was awarded to Sew News and the collective brainchild of Beth Bradleym Ann Hardell, Amy Stalp, Ellen March, and Colleen Skells. Inspired by haute couture, the sophisticated yet fantastic colors of Alice in Wonderland, and Cecil Beaton’s costume design in My Fair Lady, this dress was sponsored by XPDEX and modeled by Corine Emory.
Really, though, and in the risk of coming off corny, everyone was a winner as these dresses were sold at auction to go to charity. A big thanks to Scott Lary and his troops for pulling off another highly-talked about show.

How talked-about? Well, see the news feed for yourself:

Paper Fashion Show

If you haven't RSVP'd yet, do so. Good cause good fashion, good amount of paper cuts. If you need more of an incentive, head on over to our friends at ThisWeekInDenver, the have a feature around one of the design teams.

This year will feature paper clothing made by teams from a wide range of areas of expertise. Some design teams include well-known, local fashion designers — a team headed by Mona Lucero, joined by both painter Jason Appleton and mash-up master dBom, promises to be avant-garde. Rebecca Vaughn, Head Professor of Sculpture at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, will lead an academic contingent and Randall Erkelens, representing the local design firm Section 45, will head a stable of graphic designers. A group from the locally-published magazine Sew News, rounds out the competition — these guys won the first competition with a stunning, snowflake-inspired dress, complete with Christmas lights. These few aren’t the only teams participating, but they just may be the ones to beat.

Need more, how about the good cause:

Paper Couture benefits Downtown Aurora Visual Arts (DAVA, as it is more commonly known), a community arts center that provides a safe space for kids to experience visual arts in a neighborhood that isn’t always conducive to doing so. They provide drop-in studios where 7 to 17-year-olds can come after school and work on a variety of creative projects, as well as on-job training and internships intended for middle school-aged kids. Other programs work to involve the whole family or supply outreach for those who can’t get to DAVA. Last year Paper Couture raised thousands of dollars for DAVA, and the kids get involved, too, making dresses right alongside the other designers.

Paper Fashion Show Call For Entries 2008!!

If you'd like to be involved in a high-fashion runway show that's creative, fun, and benefits the creative community, now is your chance.

Deadline to sign up: February 1, 2008.

ADCD is now signing up teams to design paper fashion creations to be modeled in our runway show on March 20th, 2008.

What is the ADCD Paper Fashion Show? First Check this out:

Teams sign up to design fashions created from paper that's donated by our sponsors (who happen to produce the best & widest variety of papers available today). These fashions are then showcased at our grand runway show, and voted on by our panel of judges. The fashions are then put up for auction to raise money for the charitable recipient benefiting from the event.

Designs may be for men or women. Your designs will be showcased by runway models—you may provide your own model, or we can provide talent for you. We will also provide hair and make-up services for models if needed. The event will feature a social where attendees can mix & mingle; the highlight of the event being the runway show featuring local entertainment and your paper fashions being modeled and voted on by our panel of judges.

You may have as many people on your team as you wish - and there is no cost for participating. However, a maximum of 4 people per team will receive free admission, any additional team members receive the discounted ticket price of $10 (standard tickets are $25).

Final teams will be assigned the first week in February, so if you are interested in participating and creating a paper fashion, please email us at paperfashion@adcd.com ASAP, and we'll get in touch with you to follow up and provide more details and direction.
