Art & Copy, a new film coming Aug. 21

Just Do It. Arguably the most iconic tagline of the late 20th century.

Did you know Dan Wieden crafted this masterpiece for Nike shortly after hearing a captured serial killer say “Let’s do it.” to a firing squad?

Migrate south from Portland to San Fran, and advertising legend Hal Riney tells a more personal story. He opens up about his father being hauled off to prison, which later steered Riney into advertising as an outlet for self-expression.
On a surface level, that’s not exactly a stirring story. Then again, consider Riney masterminded the commercial for Ronald Reagan that all but locked him in for a second presidential term.

Such stories may be a far cry from the days of Mad Men, yet have been vital factors in molding modern American culture. And such stories loom large in Art & Copy, a new film produced by The One Club and premiers August 21 at Denver’s very own Starz! Film Festival.

Directed by documentary filmmaker Doug Pray (Scratch, Surfwise), this hypnotic visual treat glides us through historic campaigns and the advertising luminaries who conjured such powerful ideas. The film captures the energy and passion of Lee Clow (Apple), George Lois (MTV and Tommy Hilfiger), and Phyllis Robinson (Clairol). Rare interviews from Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein, Cliff Freeman, Jim Durfee, Mary Wells and Dan Kennedy also splash onto the silver screen.

We get a unique peek under the tent of the creative process and show how products jumped off the shelf to become lifestyle icons the world loves and embraces. And in a world polluted with junkyards of bad advertising, it’s important to observe and celebrate the power of good advertising.

Art & Copy captures that.

We invite you to come see Art & Copy, with wine and food served following the showing. This mesmerizing film will be introduced by Rob Reilly from Crispin, Porter + Bogusky. Rob is a partner and co-executive creative director, who served as global creative director on Burger King (yes, he’s responsible for the creepy King). Today, he and his partner oversee digital and brand communication for powerhouse clients at CP+B such as Volkswagen, Microsoft and Coca-Cola.

Chase Jarvis to ADCD Members: Create, Share, Sustain

Chase Jarvis CURRENT: The Consequences of Creativity from Chase Jarvis on Vimeo.

The video from our Speaker/Judge at the end of May.

I was recently invited to speak to the Art Director's Club of Denver and the ASMP about creativity, and subsequently delivered that keynote two weeks ago. This video is a recording of that talk. Hope it strikes a chord with you.

I had a blast connecting with some of the creative community in Denver/Boulder while I was in town, and it was also a great honor to judge your annual advertising awards show with some rather distinguished ad gurus from around the country. Thanks to the ADCD for being such gracious hosts.

Additionally, the video should be downloadable via my iTunes podcast within the next 24-48 hours.

Big thanks to Chase (and all our Judges) this year.

Chase Jarvis Reminder

A couple times each year I tear myself away from making stuff and blowing it and getting run over by cars for long enough to do a couple keynote talks. One of those times is this Friday in Denver. Open to the general public. Focus is on creativity.

What: Chase Jarvis Keynote Address
Date: Friday, June 12
Time: 6pm gather, 7pm start
Location: Denver Newspaper Auditorium
Details: www.ADCD.com

ALSO wanted to let you know Chase is having an expressly casual Chase Jarvis SOCIAL Thursday 6/11 (tomorrow) in Boulder. All are welcome. Fan him on Facebook or follow me on Twitter to find out time and place.

Lastly, in case you missed 'em, he made some fun of himself and did some laughable (er..dubious) teaser vids for this talk here and here. Low and behold, an ol' pal McNally followed it up with this funny parody.

Hope to see you at one or both.

Adult Swim: Jacob Escobedo and “Bump Man” Michael Cahill

Continuing on our romp through those things you should do. Do RSVP on the link right over there >>>>>> for Adult Swim.

Not familiar with Adult Swim you say? Sad existence you live. Fear not. Head on to the site, see the experience that is...Adult Swim. Or just stay awake really late, put the kids to bed and turn on Cartoon Network. Be forewarned though, this ain't your kid's network.

The formal words:
Recent years have seen animation roar back into the spotlight as the courageous Adult Swim gravitates this world away from Saturday morning to Saturday nights. Titles today like Fullmetal Alchemist, Sealab, Cowboy BeBop, and Robot Chicken have introduced this new era with creativity, style, and a little sass.

We’re thrilled to announce our May speaker will be a team from Adult Swim. Creative Director Jacob Escobedo and “Bump Man” Michael Cahill will be speaking at an ADCD event, Thursday May 14. Their presentation will cover all things past, present and future for the powerhouse network.

It’s happening at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. ADCD members and RMCAD students (with ID) are free. Non-members are $20 and students are $15. Seating is limited-big time. Get tickets to this event while you can.

But why be formal, just get there.

Chase Jarvis

Hey Kiddies. Thought we would take a little time and get you up to speed on our up coming events. First, let's divide you into two groups. The first is those of you who know Chase Jarvis. Now that you are all up to speed, check out some of the vids he has pulled together.

Oh, yeah, also know that the Annual Show Call for Entries is coming, and if you want, get the head start here, or just wait for the mailer. What ever floats your boat. Just get Denver's best work here so that we can flaunt it.

Paper Fashion Show

It's the poster for the Annual Paper Fashion Show. It's a damn nifty piece of flair for your outfit that night. Whichever it is, it is the work of the locals from Monigle and Associates. Longtime dress builders, turned step-in-and-pitch-a-great-idea guys and gals. Next time you see them, thank them for us would ya?

Oh, and if you have no idea of what this is, first, where have you been? And second, check out some of the shots from Mark Stevens here.

The Latest Mixer

And yes, this is a shout out to those who decided to do something the day before V-Day. Even if it was merely having a drink with us. And for those of you who didn't make it, this is kinda like being there, if not really like being there. And oh, big shout out to the one guy working, Soko Photo, for capturing the faces there.

Student Show: A Belated Thought or Two

So, a week ago at this very time I was leaving the ADCD Student Show hosted by RMCAD in the rotunda space. If you haven't been there for an event, it's like a giant gazebo attached to another building. And it was perfect for the show this year. There are predictions about next year's show needing a bigger space. Anyway, that was a full week ago — and yes, I'm just getting to writing about it now. Apologies.

But you know, the week has given me a little distance from it and now I can see more clearly some of the reasons why I think it was a great success. They are:

1. The Denver area has a lot of schools with design related studies. It was fantastic to have them all together in one place, showing off their students' work.
2. The students were proud. They brought their families. And their friends. And I watched as they made the rounds actually looking studiously at and discussing the work of their peers.
3. The space. Gallery-like and big enough to accommodate everybody yet small enough to make it feel like a hot-ticket event, it was perfect.
4. The DJ. J. Scott Womack, A.K.A. cobelco, is a fantastic mood enhancer. Strike that, he creates the scene. Some music is fine for the background and some music is great front and center. cobelco's wide range of influences and spontaneous mixing saavy combine to construct something that is more like the skeleton of an aquatic creature. The underlying groove helped the event and the attendees move along fluidly, occasionally accented by something recognizable or, even better, a completely new flourish. That's how he does it.
5. Kimberly Carey Putnam. The event seemed effortlessly put together by Kimberly and her crew. All her planning made an occasion that the students, their families and the ADCD can be proud of.
6. Finally, the fact that this show happened just weeks after the much successful and beneficial Student Briefies event (see previous posts labeled Briefies Wow), has me thinking that the ADCD really has something to offer the younguns in the profession. I think this may not be as obvious as it could be. And that's too bad, but I think that will change.

Stay tuned for more of the same. And tell a student about ADCD. Good for the student, good for the community.

Mixer Recap

If you missed it, don't worry, we'll do it again. But a big shout out to Bryce Boyer Productions and Post Modern. Keep an eye out here, and on the ADCD Facebook group, as we will be posting links to get the other shots up. And again, if you missed it, big thanks to all members.

You, Me, a Few Others

That’s right. You’re taken care of. It’s a FREE event with live music and a keg.

ADCD Members, past, current and future, can gather for an evening of networking, laughing, and a few summer surprises.

We’re thinking a photo booth and 80s board games, just for kicks. Oh yeah, and we’ll roll in that keg too (thanks to Bryce Boyer Photography for the photo booth and the beer).

2008 Paper Fashion Show

It took us a little while, but if you missed the show, take a gander at this. Great show, thanks to all who participated.

4th Annual Paper Fashion Show

Oh sure. Models can strut around in silk and polyester on some Parisian runway. But it takes real talent to pull it off in paper. The 4th Annual ADCD Paper Couture Show again didn’t disappoint as teams of Colorado’s most up-and-coming designers sliced and diced paper to create dazzling dresses out of this intriguing materials. Attendance was at an all-time high at the DC Lounge for this fundraising event (all proceeds going to the Downtown Center for the Visual Arts), and saw tight, tight competition. In fact, first place and third place were only separated by a mere four points.

Here are your 2008 winners:

First Place went to Five Green Boxes. Designers Charlotte Elich, Carrie Vadas, Rachele Elich and Carlen Vadas teamed up to create “Printemp”, an inspiration concocted by Springtime and the Astro Bright line of paper sponsored by XPEDX. Jennifer Carpenter modeled.

Second Place was given to EDAW with Vaike Hass, JanMarie Locket, Kathy Kambic, Allison Graham, Desnise Anderson piloting four outfits that span the history of the profession of urban planning and landscape architecture. Kathy Kambic and Clay Phellan modeled. XPDEX sponsored

Third Place was awarded to Sew News and the collective brainchild of Beth Bradleym Ann Hardell, Amy Stalp, Ellen March, and Colleen Skells. Inspired by haute couture, the sophisticated yet fantastic colors of Alice in Wonderland, and Cecil Beaton’s costume design in My Fair Lady, this dress was sponsored by XPDEX and modeled by Corine Emory.
Really, though, and in the risk of coming off corny, everyone was a winner as these dresses were sold at auction to go to charity. A big thanks to Scott Lary and his troops for pulling off another highly-talked about show.

How talked-about? Well, see the news feed for yourself:
