Defenestrate

Warning: this post is for the readers, those people, who like me start off almost every creative endeavor with words rather than images. Sorry, no eye candy here.

Okay, so readers of the BBC online submitted their favourite (BBC's spelling, of course) words and the BBC published 50 of them with some comments here. Some of the comments are pretty interesting. I love word-association-thinking and lists of words. It's often the creative jolt I need to get my brain seeing things differently, and as language is a shared experience, words often take me to images that will be surprising, but somehow shared, as well.

The first word on the list was Defenestrate, which means "the action of throwing something or someone out of a window." The first thing I remembered was an experience I had in 9th grade. Forgive me the indulgence, but I'll share it here.

I was in math class, and we were going through a homework assignment, which I did notoriously poor on. After grading our own work by switching papers with a peer, our teacher surprised us by asking that we turn it in. Well, like I said, I didn't perform too well on the homework, which is why I crumpled it up and threw it out the window. Despite the logic of my actions, my teacher didn't believe me when I said I didn't have any work to turn in. I was taken out to the hall because our discussion got a little heated... finally I had to confess, with embarrassment, the reason I couldn't turn anything in, and to prove the validity of my confession, he made me produce the evidence. I found my homework on the lawn next to scholl and did my best to iron it out on my way back to my second-story classroom. In the end, he chuckled a bit, and we were a little more friendly towards each other after that. Perhaps he had his own defenestration history. If only I'd known that word back then, I could have really impressed him.

Joe Duffy to Judge ADCDs 53rd Annual Award Show

2008 ADCD Show Judge #1: Definitely not an average Joe.

That's right, one of the most respected names in the branding and design community—Joe Duffy, founder and pilot of Duffy & Partners. Joe and his troops changed and elevated the design game by collaborating with legendary ad agency, Fallon, where together they masterfully blended branding, design, and advertising. His sharp understanding of how design influences consumer attitudes has triggered many big ideas on all fronts—retail environments, brand experiences, marketing communications. Joe's work has influenced our very culture by pioneering brands and identities for the likes of Coca-Cola, Starbucks, McDonald's, The Islands of The Bahamas, EDS, Nikon, FAO Schwarz, and on and on and on. In 2005, Joe wrote the book Brand Apart (a must-read). It is a profile of the most powerful integrated branding case histories of the past two decades.

Needless to say, we're stoked about Joe. The show isn't until early fall, but we couldn't contain our excitement. In weeks to come, we will announce three more judges to join Joe in looking at the best work Colorado has to offer.

These are just FANTASTIC.
Print below, not as good as the TV. Can't find the agency responsible for them though, anybody have an idea?

on creativity

Today's food for thought: an often read, worth re-reading tutorial on being creative.

A few of the important rules here and more in the full article:

  • "Ignore everybody

  • The idea doesn't have to be big. It just has to be yours

  • Everyone is creative; everyone is given a box of crayons in kindergarten.

  • Never compare your inside with somebody else's outside"
