The Big Caption

Companion to the big picture, this is wonderful. The proof that typography might just save the world. The Big Caption

Start the Young Typographers Early

Studio 3, an in-school design agency at the Graphic Design Department of Westerdals School of Communication just produced this workbook of typography for designers. The intent is to maybe teach something. However, the way it was styled would be perfect to introduce solid typography to young budding designers, really young. Hit the link to flip through the book or purchase.

Need Help with Choosing a Typeface?

By no means could this be all encompassing, but it is an admirable start, especially if you are just new to design.

File this under IWITTDTF

As in "I Wish I Thought To Do This First." Arial, you cheap knock-off of Helvetica, at least you changed ever so subtly. VIA YOUMIGHTLIKETHIS

Fall In

How to fall into a war isn't the most conceptual line but the simple hand cut type is just wonderful. Might have lost its impact if it were illustrated.Tita, Milano, Italy.

Sub Pixel Type

This is impressive, why, let's count the ways. Its meant to be 3 pt type, legible, and made by hand. Not sure what to use it for, but there is a client out there rejoicing, they can fit the entire brief on the sticker. Not any of the ones I know though, they are all great.

if you love type, and you do. Don't you. Two bits of knowledge, there is this typophile film festival and type is only improved upon when in stop motion animation. All real (as they say) no CG.

Light Calligraphy

Two of the toughest skills to master have been elegantly blended with amazing results. The eye popping light painting/calligraphy you see here is the work of photographer/typographer Julien Breton aka Kaalam light caligrapher. As a fan of both, these are amazing.

All of Time in Type

A little perspective for your day. Not a new idea, but I do like the timeline in type. I only wish it were longer and more in depth, but I suppose that would take too long. You'll have to click the link to dee it though, Seed Magazine.

Obsessive Commitment to Concept

This book cover was designed by Isaac Tobin, using hand lettering by Lauren Nassef. Lettering done by hand, yes, but not drawn by hand. Pinpricks through heavy card stock was the method, perfectly illustrating the book's title. Awesome. Haven't seen the book in person, but it'd be really cool if the hand pricking was mass-duplicated on every cover so you could actually feel it. Regardless, great execution.

Love Type

Found this over at CreativePro.org and had to share:

The 1927 edition of Studio Handbook by Samuel Welo is 233 pages of beautiful type and timeless design advice. Only this book comes with a twist – every page was hand-lettered by Welo.

Little is know of Welo, but he does have a flair for the hand drawn type. Rarely do I regret the added tool of the computer, but hand drawn type is rare if not impossible to find anymore. That is a skill the computer has killed, and we will forever be poorer for it. There is nothing like hand drawn type, done well of coarse. Head on over to the link for more. Lots more. Maybe we can just wait for the power to fail and head back to the good old days, then again, there would be a lot less to sell and I'll need to find a new skill.

I Love Type

Is there anything closer to a designers heart than type. I'd take it hot, cold, with a side or plain. Even if it is photography playing out as type. Anything that is type, I like. Especially when it is good.

Word Cyclone

Alice in Wonderland with Processing from zeh fernando.

This is cool. I'd like to see it used in an automobile spot, perhaps, with powerful copy at just the right places. The spot starts out dark like this, but as it goes on, a country road scene fades in just slightly, maybe even something suggesting the Wizard of OZ, but the scene does not overtake the copy cyclone. At the end, the object of the ad comes rushing through the cyclone, scattering the words, which turn into falling leaves. The car is filled with, of course, Dorothy et al.

That'd be neat.
