Fun Idea

Ain't no way I'd drink anything from there, with the possible exception of the Magician, if he were nice. The cans come in a generic package, so you are not sure what is in them. Is it possible they took the idea too far.

Long Time

After spending the weekend with Rob, the judge from Rethink Communications in Vancouver, i have a great respect for the way Canadiens think. Wo when I ran across this, I couldn't resist posting the work from Wax, Calgary, Canada.

THIS ONE WILL BE BIG

On Friday the 13th (yes it a Friday, there was a misprint on the invites) we bring in four of the brightest minds, from four of the hottest shops in design, advertising, and photography. They will spend the next few days identifying the best work in Colorado for our 53rd Annual Show. But before they do that, Howard will honor us with a presentation of his work and the talent that got him to the heights of his profession.

-AND-

While your listening to Howard you may want to lean over to Alan, Jim or Rob and pick their brains too.

RSVP here, for what promises to be one great event.

Architect Secretly Builds Epic Scavenger Hunt into NYC Apartment

This is so Cool, and yes, I want one, and no I can't afford it, so I guess I'll have to start building my own.

In any case, the finale involved, in part, removing decorative door knockers from two hallway panels, which fit together to make a crank, which in turn opened hidden panels in a credenza in the dining room, which displayed multiple keys and keyholes, which, when the correct ones were used, yielded drawers containing acrylic letters and a table-size cloth imprinted with the beginnings of a crossword puzzle, the answers to which led to one of the rectangular panels lining the tiny den, which concealed a chamfered magnetic cube, which could be used to open the 24 remaining panels, revealing, in large type, the poem written by Mr. Klinsky.

The Ninja Drops Future Video on THE WEB Knowledge

If you're not familiar with the ninja, he looks forward to killing you soon, it's a long story. head on over to askaninja.com and enjoy. In the meantime, check out this post where he is nearly helpful on describing video on the web. Which, if you think about it, he has been wildly popular with just that, video on the web.

Play the Building

David Byrne from Talking Heads has created a building (well, not the building) that you can play. This comes from Boing Boing TV (which is also worth looking up). Nice installment art, and is what I believe to be an original idea, they do still exist. Apology: it is a bit long and you have to sit through a few Verizon ads, but it is the Michael Bay ad, which I find entertaining anyway.

Sun-Rype Fruitify Yourself

DDB Canada, Vancouver, I especially like the way the images are executed. I'd probably pay attention for longer than comfortable.

Crime is Everywhere

Wonderful executions (please pardon the pun). Beautifully shot, and the ideas is fantastic. One of the wish I'd thought of that ideas for me anyway. BETC Eurorscg, Paris, France (anyone else notice we've been posting a lot of work out of Paris Lately?)

Not really a big idea or extremely cool concept, just some Kick-Ass stop motion and a lot of personal motivation...

Self-initiated stop-frame animation project.
Initially it was thought for a client's brief, but
as the job was cancelled, we decided to go ahead
anyway just for the sake of having fun.

'Tis the Time:Summer Interns

Great article form AdAge.com's writer Brad Karsh (Brad Karsh is president of JobBound and JB Training Solutions. He spent 15 years at Leo Burnett in Chicago.),
A little something to thinks about as you send that intern out for coffee:

INVEST TIME UPFRONT

"I conduct a workshop for interns and new hires called "Your First 500 Days." Over the course of the summer, I work with hundreds of interns across companies big and small helping them make the transition from student to professional.

Half of the interns I work with complain that they have nothing to do. They sit at their desks and surf the internet, wasting away the summer. Why? Most of the managers I encounter say they don't have time to teach their interns anything or give them work to do.

Don't fall into that trap. Today's students are high-achieving, goal-oriented contributors. If you spend the first week training, mentoring and teaching them, you'll be rewarded with solid work and significant contributions across the remaining nine weeks.

GIVE THEM MEANINGFUL ASSIGNMENTS

I know of creative interns who have sold entire campaigns, account interns who have delivered client presentations and media interns who have developed and sold digital-media plans. Throw them into the mix and see what they can do.

Offer a summer-long intern a project or case study. You know that "to do" you've had on your list forever? You've been meaning to figure out how to enhance your online presence and check out how to sell your brand on Facebook or YouTube. Give that project to an intern.

TREAT THE SUMMER LIKE A 10-WEEK INTERVIEW

There's no better way for you to determine if an employee is the right fit. Three months in the office definitely beats a 45-minute phone interview.

Eighty-five percent of companies use internships as a steppingstone to full-time hiring. Don't get left out.

DON'T GO TOO SOFT ON THEM

At my former company, we'd take interns to Cubs games, treat them to Second City tickets or whisk them away on a Chicago River boat cruise.

The goal was to impress them so that they'd want to come back and work after graduation. They did -- to jobs that were oh, so different. We ended up having a huge attrition problem with our former interns. As they left, we'd hear things like "Where were the free lunches and Cubs games?" They really had no idea what the job was going to be like.

Now, I'm not suggesting you make them work in a dungeon for the summer, but the best way to tell if they will thrive in the job is to make it realistic.

Treat them like you would any new employees and see how they perform. You may have to get your own coffee, but you also may end up with some great ideas from a potential new hire."

Counterfeit Mini

Kerri Martin, Communications Manager for VW, Mini Cooper: "Invertising - get employees on board, create brand culture internally and externally. Collaboration, need common vision and understanding; Break category conventions, find out what the competition does and don’t do it; Take risks, accept rejection, you’ll end up with more successes; Define what your story is and how you are going to tell it."
