These photos of birds by Richard Barnes were taken over a two-year period in a suburb of Rome. They "beautifully highlight the tension between the individual and the collective. They also highlight a growing field of research studying how animals self-organize into moving bodies. The results may provide clues to questions ranging from how cells aggregate around a wound to how financial markets swing on the aggregate choices of individuals." Very cool.
